A buyer’s checklist for packaging certificates

A logo is a starting point, not the complete specification. Match the holder, product, scope and date before approving a packaging order.

A buyer’s checklist for packaging certificates

1. Identify the exact document

Begin with the complete certificate and its annex, not a cropped logo. Record the certificate number and the legal company name. A trading name, an affiliated factory and a raw-material supplier may be different entities. Ask which entity will manufacture the item and how its document relates to your purchase.

2. Separate different claims

FSC chain of custody concerns forest-based material sourcing; it is not a compostability test. Our supplied BPI copy describes printed paper straws up to 352 g/m², not every product in the catalogue. Our DIN 7W0517 document registers an upstream resin, while DIN 7P1802 concerns specified kraft food containers. Read the actual description and restrictions for each record.

3. Check status, then file the order evidence

Use the issuer’s records where available, including FSC Search and the BPI catalogue. A printed expiry date is not a live status check. For the purchase file, request the item code, full material construction, applicable certificate and relevant test report together. If a coating, ink or supplier changes, ask whether the evidence still applies. Confirm local collection arrangements before making disposal claims to end users.
